Day 2 - 26 May 2019 Sunday
Summary
- Chatuchak Weekend Market
- Union Mall
- Big C
We went to Chatuchak Weekend Market 9.30 am.
Outside the BTS station, there is a waffle shop that was recommended by some Youtuber. So we bought it as our breakfast. The waffle was not as big as that in Singapore. You couldn't really taste the chocolate flavour. The sugar on top of the waffle covered it up. It was ok-ok.
We walked down the stairs (towards MRT). As per some bloggers say, follow the crowd, so we did. Actually just walk straight, turn right when you started to see vendors in tent.
Many people suggested going to Chatuchak in the morning because it will be cooler. Well, I don't there is much difference. The morning heat will make you sweat. Wear shorts, bring umbrella, fan and water bottles to beat the heat.
Eating ice cream under the hot sun was refreshing.

The main street was the hottest area cause there wasn't any shade or shelter. However, those cheap/nice clothing seems to be more plenty along the main street.
[Sorry about the lack of pictures though. It was too hot and I was busy shopping. :P]
Walk in the alley where there is shade or linger longer at stalls with strong fan wind. Not all pathway will allow you to walk through so you will be force to walk under the sun. There will be areas where it doesn't smell nice too.
There were many shirts with cute design. There will be stalls selling same design at different price. For just picture design on a sleeveless smooth white shirt, you can buy it at around 100 baht. So anything above it, forget about it.
The clothing usually don't have lining inside. Their clothes usually is thin strap or long sleeves. Since thin strap is not my style and I can't bear the sight of long sleeves when the hot sun was frying me, I didn't buy anything much.
There were stalls selling jeans material stuff. But because of the hot weather, I didn't take much close look at it.
The cheapest clothing store that sell decent design cost only 60 baht (for female, freesize, around m size)! The design is just some simple word print. But it came with a hood so it feel more worth it than just normal t-shirt. Similar design but for male and larger size cost much more.
Even though we bought 3. but the seller didn't allow bargaining. Since it was relatively cheap, we still buy it.

However the cutting around the armpit area may not be the best though. We didn't realise it until we wear it. It looks okay, and we measured it, so we know the armhole is a bit bigger. However the main issue is the front of the armhole (near chest area) will protrude out, which is a bit weird.
There were some korean/japanese style clothing but the price was around 150 baht and above. It is still affordable but I think perhaps you can get it cheaper online. The clothing usually don't have lining inside. Their clothes usually is thin strap or long sleeves. We ate at a popular chicken noodle store for lunch (Section 21, Soi 29 facing Soi 47). We actually chance upon it and since we saw so many people, and perhaps it look a tad familiar (perhaps due to my excessive research), we decide this is it.
There were benches under the tent and some more seating inside. Even though there is an air-conditioner, I don't think it was powerful enough or even open. However, it was definitely cooler than outside.

You can choose the noodle, chicken and soup that you want. Their chicken wings were not the wing portion but the wing shoulder. It wasn't really very tender but not too dry too. Their noodles will include a lot of bean sprout.
The broth was have very strong flavour. Their Tom Yam taste and the amount of noodles was like Singapore's Mee Siam. Price was very affordable.
There was a bakery store that sell garlic bread. Buy more else you will regret it! The bread was super crispy and addicting. However, it wouldn't keep your hunger away for long.
Took out half of it for next day breakfast |
The hot weather will make you tired of shopping soon. I believe I didn't shop every stalls. There were indeed many stalls but since there were many stalls selling similar clothing, it will looked as if you walked pass before.
In my research, I know there is a Chatuchak app. Perhaps the next time, I would look for specific stalls instead of walking aimlessly under the hot sun.
However, due to my packed cupboard, and limited budget, I want to buy clothing that really appealing, unique or special.
Using the toilet at Chatuchak require some money, I think 10-20 baht.
2.30 pm - Left Chatuchak for MRT
Do note that MRT station is not connected with BTS internally.
You can use the toilet at MRT station for free but without tissue paper.
The token used for MRT station is a black rounded object that you can use it to tap during entrance. It works like a mini ez link card.
Entrance to Union Mall |
When we reached Union Mall, we sat at the chair to rest. We decide to go and look for a massage parlor.
3.20 pm - At basement, there is a massage parlor. We have our foot massage there (150 baht for 30 min). Do ask them to put powder on your feet after that if you are wearing heels. Else you will be left with slippery, oily feet!
After our foot massage, we felt hungry so we decided to eat at the food court on the same level. You need to add money into the 1 day food court card at the counter. They will return the remaining money inside to you with no extra charges.
There were many shops. The design here is indeed more "international"? Haha...There were more blogshop apparels style. However, we didn't buy anything. Nothing really catches my eyes. Those that caught my attention wasn't cheap enough or there were other cons.
I feel that price here may have increased due to more media exposure. There weren't many 100 baht clothing (as what I saw from other blogger site when doing research). Perhaps the timing we went weren't right? There were even pieces that can go way above 300 baht.
At basement level, there were stalls selling winter wear at affordable price. But since I have no plan to go anywhere cold, I didn't buy anything.
We ate at McDonald for dinner to see the difference. The Samurai burger were cheaper than that in Singapore. However, it taste better in Singapore. There weren't many people at McDonald.
After dinner we took a look at the mart at the basement, near the entrance to MRT.
Perhaps we came out from the wrong entrance, but we didn't see any small stalls in front of Union Mall.
The design at MRT wall were quite cool.
We decided to go Big C because my fellow travel mates want to buy fruits. So we went to buy souvenir until 11 pm. Furthermore, going Big C allowed us to know the price so we would know if we saw anything cheaper elsewhere.
